Haunted Baldpate Inn in Estes Park

Most folks interested in the paranormal are well aware of The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, the inspiration for Stephen King’s excellent novel, The Shining. Many, though, aren’t aware of the haunted Baldpate Inn located in the Estes Park area as well.

Gordon Mace, born in 1885, immigrated to the United States from England with his parents when he was a child. He and his wife, Ethel Mace, visited the Estes Park area while honeymooning in 1911. They loved the beauty of the region and began homesteading and renting cabins on the property where the Inn was eventually built in 1917, a few years after The Stanley opened.

The Maces named their Inn after the fictional Baldpate Inn in the mystery novel and silent film, Seven Keys to Baldpate, by Earl Derr Biggers. In line with the story, the Maces enjoyed giving guests a souvenir key to the Inn until the metal shortage of WWI. The tradition then changed a bit as guests began bringing keys from their travels to give to the Maces.

There are now over 20,000 keys in the collection, including keys from famous buildings such as the Pentagon, Westminster Abbey, Mozart’s Wine Cellar in Vienna, and Frankenstein’s castle in Germany.

According to an interview with Sybil Barnes in 2004, Ethel was “always very gracious and would give us lemonade and cookies…” Gordon passed away in 1959, and Sybil didn’t remember him. She did recall the dining room at the Inn closing soon after Mr. Mace passed away.

Sybil was friends with Gordon and Ethel’s granddaughter, Leann, in later years. She said that Leann and her husband tried to get the Baldpate Inn going again, but she remembers taking phone calls from creditors “who were wondering why Leann was able to buy a fox coat, but she wasn’t able to pay, you know, the milk bill.”

In 1986, Baldpate Inn was purchased by the Smith family. Guests and staff members at the bed and breakfast establishment report paranormal activity that indicate the spirits of Gordon and Ethel remain at the Baldpate Inn, where they enjoyed so much happiness together.

Ethel has been seen in “her old room for years.” She is often found in the Key Room, and has been seen in what is now a storage room adjacent to the Key Room, sitting before a fireplace in a wing-backed rocking chair, with her feet up on a footstool, reading the bible. She has gray hair and wears a dress with a high collar.

The Maces are believed to be responsible for alcoholic drinks disappearing, spilling and flying off tables. Before smoking was banned in the establishment, they would sometimes smash cigarettes and hide the packs from guests.

Knocking and Footsteps are often heard in the hallway by the bathroom on the second floor near Ethel’s’ old room, as well as the sound of someone running up and down the stairways.

Some guests have experienced a strong wind rushing through the Key Room and other parts of the Inn, slamming doors. One psychic who visited the Inn believes that Ethel Mace wants people to know she is there.

Paul Hamilton, a caretaker who worked at the Inn in 1965 and again in recent years, often heard footsteps and running throughout the Inn at night when he was alone in the building. He knows there is “talk about ghosts at the Inn,” but he chooses to believe the experiences were caused by the wind “or something like that.”

The Ghost of Jack London

Most are familiar with author Jack London who penned many books and stories including The Call of the Wild and White Fang.  He was a fascinating individual, but perhaps this isn’t surprising considering his parents were quite intriguing as well.

Many don’t realize that London’s mother, Flora Wellman, worked as a spiritualist in San Francisco, channeling the spirt of Black Hawk, warrior and chief of the Sauk American Indian tribe. His biological father is believed by some to be the astrologer, William Chaney.

Jack had many adventures in his youth. In 1905, he met the love of his life, Charmian Kittredge. They were said to be soul-mates and thought to have had a very happy relationship. That same year, the couple purchased their ranch property near Glen Ellen in the Sonoma Valley of California. The ranch, Beauty Ranch, was the second love of Jack’s life.

In 1910, at the age of 34, Jack hired Albert Farr of San Francisco to build his dream home on the ranch. Sadly, in 1913, just before Jack and his wife were to move into the 26-bedroom mansion, it was destroyed by a fire. The interior of the building was ruined, and the loss had a devastating effect on the family and others involved in the building of the mansion. London tried to rebuild, but his health took a downhill slide and he passed away three years after his home was destroyed.

Jack passed away on the sleeping porch of the house on his ranch in late November of 1916. Only a few months later, his widow, Charmian, began to see his ghost. She wrote in her memoirs, “As clearly as ever I had looked upon the man, I saw Jack stepping blithely in the green domain (field in front of the ranch house)…whistling comradely to an unmistakable friend shadowing his heel—Peggy the Beloved, our small canine Irish saint.”

What better spot for his ghost to be than at his favorite place with his best little buddy walking beside him?

Today, the remains of the huge house now called Wolf House, and the rest of the ranch including Jack’s gravesite, are part of Jack London State Historic Park.

His spirit is often seen at the ruins of Wolf House by many visitors to the park. Especially in the cooler months near the time of his death, there are reports of voices calling out, the sound of metal hammers striking rock, footsteps and even apparitions in the foyer and great hall area of the ruins.

Time Travel and The Beatles

A gentleman calling himself James Richards claims to have received a cassette tape of a Beatles album called Everyday Chemistry. What’s incredibly fascinating about this statement are two major details: The album was recorded after the Beatles disbanded; and, Richards claims to have obtained the compilation via a time travel incident.

On September 9, 2009, a beautiful clear late summer afternoon, Mr. Richards and his dog were driving home to Livermore, California (in the San Francisco Bay area) from Turlock, about 60 miles east. Who could resist taking the scenic less-traveled scenic route by Del Puerto Canyon?

The duo had ventured into the canyon when Richards stopped to let his friend out for a bathroom break on the side of the road. His buddy took off running after a rabbit, and Richards was about 40 yards behind when he “stepped in a rabbit hole,” fell to the ground and knocked himself out.

Richards states that upon awakening he found himself “in a room with some furniture and electronics” and machines that he didn’t recognize. His head had been bandaged. He was very uncomfortable to note the sound of traffic outside the room. He knew he had last been in an area with few people and no houses.

Although he couldn’t see out the window, the room inside appeared as a typical room in any home other than the odd machinery. He was on his way to look out the window, when a door opened and his dog ran into the room, obviously very happy to see his human.

Standing in the doorway of the room was a man who introduced himself as Jonas. He was of slightly above medium height, with longish black hair and clean casual attire. The feel Richards picked up from the individual was “greasy.”

The man asked Richards if he was alright and explained in reply to his inquiry, “where am I,” that he was 20 feet from where he had found him unconscious in a field with his dog barking next to him.

The dark-haired man went on to relay a fantastic story that Richards had trouble believing initially. He was told that he had been transported into “parallel Earth.”

Jonas went on to relate that he had traveled to Earth, and found Richards on the ground with no one to help him in his unconscious state. He made the decision to go against his self-imposed rule of not taking outsiders through the portal because he knew the unconscious man needed help immediately.

In answer to his many questions, Jonas explained that in his world, a time machine can be purchased relatively easily. Although they are not cheap and often quite dangerous, they are not uncommon items.

As there are “an infinite amount of Earths in other dimensions, only a small amount have been explored.” He also told Richards that people often die when entering another dimension through a portal from falling if the ground is too far from the portal opening; drowning if the world entered is covered in water as it is very difficult to reopen a portal under the water; and other issues. The government in the 1950s of his world actually chose to spend money researching “safe” worlds and creating safe landing spots in other dimensions of Earth rather than continuing with the space exploration program.

Jonas worked as an explorer for a dimensional travel agency. He was looking for any “uncharted dimensions” when he found Earth.

As they conversed, Jonas and Richards discovered many similarities and differences in their worlds. As their talk led to music, naturally The Beatles came up. Jonas stated that his brother had just returned from a concert. Evidently, in hs world they are all healthy, alive and still performing together.

Jonas displayed a collection of cassette tapes (no CDs) that iincluded the same songs as we have in this dimension, but also included some album titles that Richards did not recognize. He asked Jonas if he could make him a copy of one of these. It was obvious from Jonas’s reaction that he did not want Richards to take any object with him from this dimension.

However, Richards was not able to resist temptation; and, when Jonas left the room to answer the door, he filched one of the cassette tapes. He told Jonas when he returned to the room (no further mention of a visitor at the door) that he was hungry.

They went into another room, where Richards was fed similar foods to what we eat here, although with different product names and colors including purple ketchup.

The day wore on the same as it does on this dimension, and Richards said he needed to get back. They returned to the room Richards had found himself in initially and parted amicably. (I have to wonder how Jonas felt after he discovered he has been robbed!)

As Richards and his dog went through the portal, they had the sensation of feeling wet and dry at the same time. Richards said his dog even shook itself afterwards.

The vehicle was on the road where Richards had left it, “and there was a straight line burn mark on the ground where the portal had shown up.” The sun had set in our world, and Richards drove home in the dark.

Mr. Richards purchased a cassette player to listen to the music on the tape, and the “album” has been uploaded to youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9KHsNU-prs&list=PLCA060A374417C6B1. The name on the card sleeve on the original cassette Richards found was “Everyday Chemistry,” and the track names were included as well.

The Fresno Nightcrawler

A recent discovery in the world of cryptids is a fascinating creature called the Fresno Nightcrawler, or the Fresno Alien, first appearing in California in November, 2007. The creature was videotaped walking across the front lawn of a Fresno resident.

At a 2008 MUFON Conference, Jose, the man who had recorded the incident, talked about the frightening events of that night.

Jose was sound asleep when awakened by the sounds of his dogs barking agitatedly around 2 a.m.  He had been having some trouble with theft at his home recently and had recently installed a surveillance camera.

He looked at his video monitor immediately, and saw the image of a creature walking across the front yard. The small creature appears to stop for a moment, and then resume walking. A second similar creature follows. Footage can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_cjmy_ehiI.

A few years later, the cryptid was again captured on video camera and can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMv85lRAmuk.

Two of these odd entities were caught on a security camera in Yosemite National Park near Fresno at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziB35K9shuI.

The Nightcrawler cryptids appear to be only two or three feet tall, of extremely thin build, and without a torso or arms.

What is this creature? A new or previously undiscovered cryptid? A resident from another planet? A freaky elf? A puppet?

Evidence in the form of carved stone statues supports the legend that the Native American culture of California has been aware of their existence for a very long time. They are believed to be aliens from a planet with considerable swampland as part of their terrain. The long legs aid in mobility on their home planet.

The Native American culture believes these beings are here to assist in “the Awakening” of Earth beings to live in balance and harmony, and to become aware of the connection individuals have to all parts of nature as well as to each other.

Images of the Nightcrawlers carved in wood have also appeared in photographs that have come to light recently…adding more mystery to this enigmatic case.

Naga Fireballs of Thailand

Each year in October, during a full moon at the end of the Buddhist Lent, a mysterious phenomenon occurs above the Mekong River in the Phon Phisai region outside of Nong Khai in Thailand.

In the evening hours after sunset, pink and red spheres of light called Naga Fireballs (bang fai phaya nak) silently rise from the river hundreds of yards into the night sky and dangle in the air for a few minutes before extinguishing. The fireballs range in size from tiny sparks to basketball-sized spheres. Some years, only a few of the fire orbs appear; but, often there are hundreds of them.

Many locals believe that the Naga Fireballs are the “breath of a giant sea serpent” called Naga who is said to live in the Mekong River in an underwater city called “Muang Badanand.” The creature protects the area and its people from harm. The sea serpent awakens each year at the end of the Buddhist Lent season “to honour the conclusion of vassa.” The creature is said to have magical powers and can transform into a human being if it wishes.

This reason for the phenomenon is very controversial (except among locals); and, although the celebration at the end of Buddhist Lent is ancient, it is unclear when the phenomenon of the fireballs actually started.

Residents in the area are insistent that the Naga Fireballs a/k/a Mekong Lights are referenced in various ancient writings, but this has not been substantiated.

The period of Buddhist Lent is ninety days long, usually starting in July and ending in October when Lord Buddha is said to return to Earth from Heaven.

The festival to commemorate the end of the Buddhist Lenten continues to grow in size each year and now includes fireworks, river cruises, a market bazaar, boat races, boat floats, a food fair and other events.

Encounters with Black-Eyed Kids (BEK)

Entities appearing as black-eyed kids with pale skin are a relatively recent phenomena that is continuing to frighten the public as stories pour in about these creatures said to be on Earth to “clean up the planet.” Many sources believe they have been sent by the Reptoid alien species to remove the weakest human beings from our world.

Many sightings of these black-eyed children were reported in the UK throughout the 1980s. The first appearance in the United States was documented by Journalist Brian Bethel in 1998. He was sitting in his car in a movie theater parking lot one night when he was approached by two male children who looked to be around 12 years of age.

They appeared normal in their mode of dress. They said they were there to see a movie, but had forgotten their money at home. They wanted him to give them a ride.

For no discernible reason, Bethel felt very frightened of the boys and did not want to give them their desired ride. The children continued to ask him to give them a ride, becoming more demanding. Although he felt very scared, a part of him did want to open the door and let them into his vehicle.

Upon closer inspection of their faces, Bethel saw that their eyes were very odd-looking. They were completely dark black with no pupils or irises. This compelled him to resist their demands and drive away.

Since that time, there have been many accounts of black-eyed children knocking on people’s doors requesting to use the telephone. The occurrences usually take place around dusk or during the night.

The “children” usually appear to be between the ages of 12 and 17. Anyone approached by these entities always experiences a feeling of despair and unexplainable terror. They will not leave until the individual they have approached closes the door and ignores them.

Most individuals involved in these encounters feel that they might have been hypnotized by the black-eyes in an attempt to get inside the house. Evidently, similar to a vampire, these creatures have to be invited into the home or vehicle to make an entrance. They aren’t interested in drinking an individual’s blood, though; they want to eat our souls.

No reports from anyone who has succumbed and invited these creatures into their homes have been received. Law enforcement officials from a rural California town were called by neighbors to investigate a house in which the entire family had disappeared. The neighbors who had called the police said that some black-eyed children had knocked on their door a few nights prior requesting to be let in, but they did not grant the request. Evidently the BEK moved on to the next house.

The most famous case of a black-eyed kid is the one in Crannock Chase in the United Kingdom. Psychic Christine Hamlett claims to have had a face-to-face encounter with this girl whom she believes died in a diphtheria outbreak many years previously. Footage captured by a drone in the area recently is believed by some to be that of the black-eyed girl of Cannock Chase. However, this case does not appear to be related to the BEKs who are supposedly here to clean up our planet.

Love those Twilight Zone moments

I saw the coolest thing on a trip recently on Highway 36 through Missouri! I had to use a rest room and I exited off the highway for this little town to find a service station. I saw there was one off to the right but it looked busy so I drove through town but didn’t find another one so I drove back. The little station had about 7 cars and I noticed they were all older cars…some classics. I pulled in next to one, turned off my car and grabbed by purse. I turned to open the door and I saw the people in the car next to me weren’t people at all…they were mannequins! My eyes were as big as saucers and my mouth dropped open. I looked around and noticed all the cars were filled with mannequins. There wasn’t a human being around anywhere. It was so eerie and Twilight Zonish and Cool 🙂

Margery the Medium: Real or fake?

Mina “Margery” Crandon was a famous psychic in the Boston area during the 1920s. Her abilities were strongly supported by Arthur Conan Doyle; although, Harry Houdini considered her to be a fraud.

Margery was married to her second husband, Le Roi Goddard Crandon, a well-established Boston surgeon when she became interested in the world of the dead.

Dr. Crandon was very interested in paranormal activity. He introduced his wife to a psychic who told the young woman that she had psychic abilities and that a “young man was attempting to contact Mina from the spirit world.”

Margery was positive that the spirt was her brother, Walter, who had died in an accident in 1911. He became Margery’s spirit guide, helping her with her very unusual séance sessions helping the upper crust of Boston contact their deceased loved ones for any last messages which she often conducted in the nude.

Margery’s great granddaughter, Anna Thurlow, said in a recent interview that she believed Margery’s interest in this field had something to do with her husband’s “morbid” fear of death.

In late July of 1924, Scientific American magazine offered a prize of $2500 “to any medium who could demonstrate telekinetic ability under scientific controls.”

The committee for the magazine included a professor of psychology from Harvard, two psychical researchers, Harry Houdini and several others.

During the investigation for the magazine, Houdini devised several techniques to provide that Margery was a fraud. It was discovered later that he was cheating and his “proof” that Margery was a fraud was discredited.

Ultimately, the money was not awarded because the committee was divided on whether or not Margery possessed true psychic powers.

Soon after this, Houdini published a book claiming to show how he proved that Margery was a fake. In 1925, J. Malcolm Bird wrote a book as research officer of the American Society for Psychical Research showing his and other ASPR members’ support of the psychic’s abilities. Bird had vehemently fought against Houdini in his efforts to discredit Margery during the investigation for Scientific American.

In 1933, American psychical researcher and founder of the Boston Society for Psychical Research Malcolm Bird wrote an article for Scientific American that indicated Mr. Bird admitted in 1930 that a fraudulent act had taken place in 1924 during a psychic session in an attempt to trick Houdini. He also claimed to be having an affair with Margery.

Interestingly, there is also some evidence to show that Margery and Houdini actually had an affair at some point. There is correspondence in existence between them and a rather flirtatious picture of Margery taken by Houdini.

Thurlow said in her interview that Dr. Crandon possibly forced Margery to conduct séances when she was opposed to doing so; and, Margery became “quite bitter in her later years and tried to commit suicide during one séance by attempting to jump off the roof of 10 Lime Street.”

Thurlow regards Margery’s work during the séances as “beautiful and fun.” She likes to think her great grandmother had a lot of fun with them.

Eventually, Margery died of alcoholism on the day after Halloween in 1941 at the age of 51. Thurow said that she predicted the date of her own death.

Woodrow Derenberger’s encounter with Alien Inrid Cold

On the night of November 2, 1966, traveling sewing machine salesman Woodrow Derenberger was driving south down Interstate 77. He was on his way home from Marietta, Ohio to Mineral Wells, West Virginia where he had lived for the past 50 years. At a few minutes after 7, near the intersection of Interstate 47, Derenberger had the strangest experience of his life.

The event started with the appearance of a speeding car coming up behind him and passing him. Following about 30 feet behind the vehicle was a U.F.O. about 30 feet long. After passing Derenberger, the flying object turned in front of him on the road, coming to a complete stop crossways in the road about a foot off the ground and blocking Derenberger’s passage. The craft was a charcoal color that glistened in D’s headlights. Derenberger saw no lights or windows.

Derenberger sat in the truck and watched a door in the strange craft open sideways. An alien/man alighted from the object and walked toward the right side of Derenberger’s truck. The craft immediately flew straight up about 50 to 75 feet and hovered there while the man communicated with Derenberger.

The being was dressed in a dark blue topcoat with a zipper down the front and buttons at the throat. The material was shiny and metallic looking. His trousers were of the same material, but a shade lighter. He looked “perfectly natural and normal as any human being.” Approximately six feet tall and very healthy-looking, he appeared as if he had a good tan. He had thick dark brown hair combed straight back. He looked like any other nice-looking 35 to 40 year old man “you would meet on the street.”

As the alien/man walked toward Derenberger, he communicated to him without speaking – telepathically – that he wanted him to roll his window down, which he did. All communication from the alien man was telepathic.

The man told Derenberger that he would like to talk with him. Derenberger was speechless. He asked him not to be frightened and assured him they meant him no harm. The alien man told Derenberger that they were the same as him, they eat, breathe, sleep and bleed the same as humans.

The man asked him what he was called. Derenberger told him his name. The being said he was called “Inrid Cold” and that he was a “searcher,” but he did not elaborate on what he was searching for. He asked about Parkersburg and what it was. Derenberger explained it was a town. The being said that where his home was, a town was called a gathering.

A few trucks drove by on the highway as the alien being stood on the right side of Derenberger’s truck and “talked” with him. Cold would glance at them and then back to Derenberger.

He was courteous and friendly and sported a smile on his face. He again asked Derenberger not to be frightened, although he was obviously nervous and frightened.

They conversed for a few minutes. Before departing, Cold told Derenberger that they would see him again.

When Derenberger arrived home, he was very upset. His wife called the police for him as he was not able to hold the phone because he was shaking so much. The police told her that this was the third call they’d received that night with similar reports.

Two nights later, driving home from Pomeroy, Ohio with a friend, he received a telepathic message that Cold was around and soon after he and his friend saw the “ship.” Cold told him during this second encounter that the person he’d really planned to communicate with had been the individual in the car ahead of his. “But the man’s car was so close to a busy intersection that Cold was afraid there might be an accident if he dropped down in front of him.” So, he chose Derenberger instead and evidently wasn’t sorry.

Cold told him in this second meeting that he came from a planet called “Lanulos,” located in the galaxy of “Genemedes.” Evidently the terrain, animals and vegetation are very similar to that of Earth. He is married to “Kimi” and had two sons and a daughter.

A time traveler from the fourth dimension, Cold was not able to stay on Earth for very long at a time because “they get younger down here instead of older. Their life span is 125 to 175 years, but if they stayed here too long, they’d go back in years and possibly forget how to manipulate their craft.”

Cold told Derenberger that they are all over the country, and there were nine ships in that area. Most crafts had two men, but one had four. One craft had a husband and wife team.

Derenberger had several visits with Cold. He was told that they have many things that would be valuable to us and that we have many things that would be valuable to them.

A group of locals that included Derenberger, a doctor, a minister and some businessmen would meet with Cold often. He brought bread from his planet that was very rich and coarse. “He even brought some spirits. Yucatan Brandy in a wooden bottle,” that tasted like eggnog. Derenberger said it made him very high.

They operated from a landing base on the moon. “There’s a Mother Ship up there, big as a football field and nine stories high.” Derenberger added that NASA knows all about it. Cold and the astronauts have even waved at each other during visits to the moon.

Cold said that they have been in contact with our government and military in an attempt to set up a meeting, but the government wanted to call all the shots and “Cold wouldn’t hear of it.”
